Thrifty Thursday...I mean Friday!!

Whoops! I know it's not Thursday, but I have gotten a little side tracked with this being the last week of school for my girls & planning my daughters 6th birthday party this Saturday. So its a day late...better late then never right?

What do you do with a dead tree when your waiting to have it replaced? Turn it into a bird feeder!
Our poor birch tree did not make it. It lived for 2 years, but this spring it didn’t come back. It was the first tree we planted out back.....

Heres the girls in the hole that we dug to plant the tree!
Tree going in...
2 years later...tree dead :(
So while I wait for my husband to replace it, I thought I’d make it have a purpose! I hit the thrift store & bought all the wood bowls I could find. Then grabbed a few screws & went to work!
First I trimmed off the branches on the sides. I just left the 2 lager ones I the middle along with the small branches on top to give the birds plenty of space to land & stick around for a while. I staggered the bowls through out, screwed them in to the tree & filled them with food. The birds have loved it !

It will do for now……but I want my new tree!!
(but the birds are happy!)

I don't know where you come up with your ideas but they are so great.

I wouldn't replace the tree - it is a work of art and functional for the birdies.

The pic' of the girls is too funny.

That is such a great idea! We had a tree in our yard do the same thing two years ago, but we left it and it grew another trunk {or limb?} and started growing again.

Very cute! Hey, in July I'm doing a one-time special link up for your best thrift type find ever. I hope you'll join in! Details will be up on my blog tomorrow morning :-) And there's a prize too!

I bet the birds are happy! It's beautiful and practical, are you really sure you want to replace it? :-)

i have been thinking about this all day. i came back to say that i really love the tree and i think you should just leave it.

maybe add a few pretty, whimsical bird houses and a bird bath.....

you could have your girls paint the bird houses and make the whole project a family thing....upkeep, filling the feeders, the girls will love it!!!

Your thrift store(s) have everything!

Might want to drill some small holes in the bottom of the bowls for water drainage?

Otherwise, just perfect. Sorry about your birch though.

That is awesome, how creative are you? Wow. I don't even think you should replace the tree. It looks so nice the way it is right now is a unique feature to your yard.

Awesome job!

Debbie,Inger & Heidi- I agree! Its kind of grown on me :) It must be growing on my husband too since after reading the comments to him he said,"well, maybe we could put the new tree behind it?" :)

Nancy- Yes! The one thing I over looked! Thank you!! :D

Get out! That is (1) totally genius, (2) beautifully executed, (3) functional, (4) gorgeous, and (5) green. Every once in a while I see something that I REALLY wish I had thought of. This is one of those times. It's really great. I wouldn't replace the tree! Thanks for sharing this.
